Ego Boy, one of the most legendary trotters in Swedish harness racing history, was born in 1967. He quickly became a crowd favorite—not only because of his success on the track but also because he was trained by a small‑town trainer from the countryside.

Early Life and Career

Ego Boy was born in Orsa at the home of his owner, Tage Hedberg, and his family. For most of his career, he was trained by harness racing trainer Ingemar Olofsson in Rättvik. The stallion won several major races during his short but remarkable career (1970–1974) and was named Horse of the Year in both 1971 and 1973. He made 67 starts in total, winning 50 races, finishing second in 9, and placing third in 1.

Major Victories and Fame

In the early 1970s, Ego Boy began to show his incredible potential. He won several major races, but it was in 1973 that he truly made history. He faced the American trotter Flower Child in a deciding heat of the Elitloppet. After setting a moderate pace for one lap—with Ego Boy in the lead and Flower Child close behind—Ingemar Olofsson increased the tempo. To the crowd’s delight, Ego Boy held his lead all the way to the finish line. Many had expected Flower Child to win easily, but Ego Boy proved that the Swedish horse from Dalarna would not back down. The race became one of the most memorable in Elitloppet history and cemented Ego Boy’s status as one of the greatest trotters Sweden has ever seen.

Across the country, fans would sing “Oh, oh, oh, Ego Boy” whenever he appeared at a racetrack.

Tragedy

Sadly, Ego Boy’s life was cut short. In 1974, just one year after his Elitloppet triumph, he died from complications related to an intestinal blockage. His sudden passing sent shockwaves through the harness racing community, and many fans mourned the beloved stallion. Despite his brief career, Ego Boy left a lasting legacy. He remains one of the few horses to truly win the hearts of people everywhere.

The Legacy of Ego Boy

Even today, decades after his death, Ego Boy is celebrated as one of the greatest trotters in Swedish history. Statues have been erected in his honor, and his memory lives on among racing fans and within Swedish harness racing culture. His victory over Flower Child in the Elitloppet has become a symbol of determination, and Ego Boy’s journey from a small farm in Orsa to becoming a national hero continues to inspire.

Ego Boy is buried in the winner’s circle at the Rättvik racetrack. Each year, he is honored with the “Ego Boy Memorial” race in Rättvik.

The story of Ego Boy is a testament to how a horse from humble beginnings can overcome all odds and become an immortal legend.
